This partnership is scheduled to feature on Morris’ forthcoming 5-track EP titled ‘Intermission’.

Maren Morris reveals her vulnerability in “Cut!”, her collaboration with Julia Michaels, where she confronts the facade of appearing flawless while privately struggling emotionally. “‘Cut!’ is about me maintaining a composed exterior throughout the day, looking flawless and keeping up appearances, not canceling any plans with friends because I want everyone to believe I’m doing well,” Morris explained in a statement. The song, released Friday, serves as a preview of her forthcoming 5-track EP titled Intermission, set to be released on Friday, August 2nd.

Maren Morris is revealing her vulnerability in “Cut!”, a new collaboration with Julia Michaels, where she explores the contrast between her polished public image and her private emotional struggles. “‘Cut!’ is about me maintaining a facade throughout the day—looking well-rested, flawless, and never canceling plans with friends—because that’s the image I want people to believe,” Morris explained in a statement. The song, released last Friday, serves as a preview of her upcoming 5-track EP titled Intermission, set to be released on Friday, August 2nd.

“Perhaps those things are all true, but at night I let the mask slip and let myself scream or fall apart to let the steam out of the kettle,” the Grammy winner added.

“It’s a cathartic release that doesn’t require secrecy, but there are worldly expectations to keep it together despite your feelings,” Morris continued. “This song gives me permission to fall apart.”

“Cut!” is the second collaboration between the two artists, following Michaels’ co-writing credit on “Circles Around This Town,” the lead single from Morris’ latest album, 2022’s Humble Quest.

The release of the song follows several significant personal developments in Morris’ life. Earlier this month, the musician made a celebratory announcement, revealing her identification as bisexual.

“happy to be the B in LGBTQ+,” Morris wrote alongside photos of herself holding Pride flags at a recent stop on her RSVP Redux Tour in Phoenix. “happy pride.”

This revelation came after Morris filed for divorce from her ex-husband of five years, Ryan Hurd, citing irreconcilable differences in October 2023. The former couple, who have a four-year-old son named Hayes together, finalized their divorce three months later in January 2024.

In September 2023, Morris made headlines by announcing her decision to take a step back from the country music industry. She marked this transition with her two-track EP titled The Bridge, which included the songs “The Tree” and “Get the Hell Out of Here.”

During this period, Morris shared that she felt “very, very distanced” from the genre and its associated politics. She expressed her efforts to challenge the status quo within country music, stating to the Los Angeles Times, “I thought I’d like to burn it to the ground and start over. But it’s burning itself down without my help.”

Morris has since clarified her previous statements, emphasizing that she is not completely leaving the country music genre but rather aiming to leave behind what she considers its “toxic parts.”

“I want to take the good parts with me,” she explained during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. “I’m from Texas, I grew up on all that music, so the way I write, the way I sing, that’s what comes out — whatever genre I’m doing or feature I’m doing.”
