Kelsea Ballerini graced the MTV Video Music Awards stage for the first time on Tuesday, September 12th. The celebrated country artist marked her 30th birthday with a captivating performance of her song “Penthouse.”
Dressed in an enchanting white gown and adorned with soft curls, Ballerini delivered a gentle rendition of the track. The audience enthusiastically joined in, singing and swaying along as she poured her heart into the song from the outdoor stage.
Then, in a symbolic gesture of moving forward, the “Heartfirst” singer surprised everyone with a costume change. She dramatically shed her white attire amid a veil of fog, revealing a chic black dress while singing the poignant lyrics, “I kissed someone new last night.”
“Penthouse” is a standout track from Kelsea Ballerini’s “Rolling Up the Welcome Mat” project, released earlier this year. This EP serves as an intimate glimpse into Ballerini’s personal journey as she navigated the end of her five-year marriage to fellow country singer Morgan Evans. As the year progressed, in August, the artist expanded the project with the deluxe edition, “Rolling Up the Welcome Mat (For Good),” which incorporated lyrical adjustments based on her live performances and introduced a new track to the collection.
At this year’s VMAs, Kelsea Ballerini stood out as the sole country artist to not only perform but also participate in the event. Interestingly, no other artist from the country genre received nominations, and the show lacks a specific category for country music, despite embracing various musical influences.
However, it’s worth noting that country music has not been completely overlooked by the VMAs in the past. Artists like Taylor Swift, Kacey Musgraves, and Kane Brown have previously graced the VMAs stage. In fact, Kane Brown made history as the first solo male country artist to perform at the show, showcasing his song “Grand” during last year’s event.
This year, Luke Combs’ “Fast Car” received a nomination for Song of the Summer at the VMAs.
Looking ahead, Kelsea Ballerini has a special hometown performance lined up in Knoxville, Tennessee. The “If You Go Down” singer will be holding a one-off show at the Thompson-Boling Arena on the University of Tennessee campus. This event is scheduled for Thursday, November 2, just before Tennessee’s annual Homecoming festivities.
