The country music duo is set to mark their 20th wedding anniversary this December.
Trisha Yearwood is opening up about her life with husband Garth Brooks.
At the “In Her Own Words: An Evening with Trisha Yearwood” event held at The Paley Center for Media in New York City on Saturday, Nov. 8, the 61-year-old country star reflected on how marriage changed her life after tying the knot with Brooks, 63, in 2005.
“After marrying Garth and moving to Oklahoma, my life slowed down,” Yearwood said. “I wasn’t touring 200 days a year anymore. I became a bonus mom to three children and focused on making our marriage work because I realized a marriage can’t thrive if you’re rarely together.”
She added, “Being present is essential. I consciously made an effort to attend soccer games, cook dinner, and really be there.”
Yearwood and Brooks first crossed paths in 1987 during a demo-recording session while both were still unsigned in Nashville. Brooks began dating Yearwood after his divorce from his first wife, Sandy Mahl, in 2001, and the couple married in December 2005. Brooks has three daughters—Taylor, August, and Allie—with Mahl.
Over the years, Yearwood and Brooks have collaborated musically, including a three-year global tour and co-writing the song “For the Last Time” for Yearwood’s 2019 album Let’s Be Frank.
Yearwood has also authored four cookbooks, with her most recent being Trisha’s Table (2015) and Trisha’s Kitchen (2021).
She released her latest album, Christmastime, on Friday, Nov. 7, which features holiday classics like “Christmastime Is Here,” “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” and “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town.”
Yearwood said the opening track of the album holds special meaning for her and Brooks.
“I had a shortlist of songs I wanted to record if I ever did another Christmas album, and the first song on that list was ‘Christmastime Is Here.’ A Charlie Brown Christmas has always been my favorite, and it’s rare to hear many people cover this song,” she shared.
