McGraw and Wilson shared the stage at CMA Fest on Saturday, June 6.
Lainey Wilson recently reflected on a meaningful childhood dream that came full circle over the weekend.
In a YouTube video posted on Tuesday, June 9, Wilson opened by reading a handwritten letter she had written to Tim McGraw as a young girl. In the note, she expressed how deeply singing, songwriting, and performing mattered to her, adding that all she needed was a chance to pursue her goals.
Wilson then transitioned to footage from CMA Fest in Nashville, where she described finally meeting McGraw as a lifelong dream come true. She shared how much of an impact he had on her growing up, even recalling how she used to choreograph dance routines to his songs and joking that she might still show him one someday.
When the two finally met, McGraw told Wilson he had only recently learned about the letter and felt disappointed that he never received it at the time. In response, he wrote her a personal message as if he had received it years earlier, imagining what he would have said back then.
Wilson became emotional after reading his reply, telling him, “You’re going to make me cry,” while playfully worrying about her makeup and expressing disbelief that her family would ever believe the moment had happened. McGraw embraced her and told her how proud he was of her success.
The surprise exchange took place during CMA Fest at Nissan Stadium on Saturday, June 6, where both artists—who share Louisiana roots—also performed together for the crowd. They delivered a rendition of McGraw’s 1995 hit “I Like It, I Love It,” adding another memorable moment to the festival.
