“Good to see you smile, even if it was just for the picture,” he sings on the chorus of the ballad.
Morgan Wallen is wrapping up 2024 with a smile.
The “Last Night” artist dropped a surprise single on Monday, Dec. 30, titled “Smile.” The track continues the themes explored in his 2024 releases “Lies Lies Lies” and “Love Somebody,” according to a press release.
In the song, Wallen, 31, reflects on life’s fleeting moments and desires, focusing on a troubled relationship depicted through “filtered snapshots.”
“It was good to see you smile / Girl, you know it’s been a while / It was good to see you smile / Even if it was just for the picture,” he sings on the chorus.
The music video for the ballad shows Wallen preparing for a late-night show performance on New Year’s Eve. While waiting for his call time in the green room, he notices a woman sitting nearby.
When it’s his turn to go onstage, Wallen surprises everyone by performing “Smile” instead of the planned “Love Somebody,” veering off-script.
Despite causing a stir with the producers, the ratings soar thanks to Wallen’s unexpected performance. The woman leaves the green room to watch him, and the two share a longing gaze before parting ways.
“Smile” was co-written by Wallen along with Rocky Block, John Byron, Ernest Keith Smith, Ryan Vojtesak, and Luis Witkiewitz. The music video was directed by Justin Clough.
Wallen, who was honored as Entertainer of the Year at the 2024 CMA Awards, has an exciting year ahead in 2025. His first-ever Sand in My Boots Festival is set to take place in Gulf Shores, Alabama, from May 16-18.
Wallen, Post Malone, Brooks & Dunn, and HARDY are set to perform at the Sand in My Boots Festival, alongside an impressive lineup of additional artists including Riley Green, Bailey Zimmerman, T-Pain, Diplo, Wiz Khalifa, The War on Drugs, 2 Chainz, Chase Rice, Three 6 Mafia, 3 Doors Down, Ella Langley, ERNEST, Morgan Wade, and Moneybagg Yo.
Fans are also eagerly anticipating a new album from Wallen in the coming year, following the release of One Thing At a Time in 2023, which he performed during his One Night at a Time Tour.
