Megan Moroney Reveals She Sometimes ‘Cried Herself to Sleep’ While Struggling with Feeling ‘Misunderstood’

The “Tennessee Orange” hitmaker released her third studio album in February 2026, Cloud 9.

Megan Moroney is opening up about the emotional challenges that have come with becoming a country music star.

During a Sunday, Sept. 6, appearance on Today with Willie Geist, the 28-year-old singer discussed how difficult it can be to maintain a private life while living in the public eye.

Moroney acknowledged that there have been moments when the pressure of fame became overwhelming.

She recalled having nights when she would cry herself to sleep because she felt misunderstood and wished she could explain everything she was experiencing to the public.

One of her biggest challenges, she said, has been figuring out how much of her private life to share while still giving fans an honest sense of what she is going through.

Moroney has found another way to express those emotions through her music, particularly on her latest album, Cloud 9.

One track, titled “Who Hurt You?,” was deliberately written in a way that she hoped would discourage people from asking her personal questions about its meaning.

The singer explained that she believes the song says enough on its own. If listeners still have questions after hearing it, she joked, she isn’t planning to provide additional explanations.

The emotional track explores the aftermath of a painful relationship, touching on loneliness, betrayal and the realization that someone may have treated others in a similar way before.

Looking back at Cloud 9, her third studio album, Moroney said she can hear how much she has developed as an artist and as a person. She described the songs as more self-assured and said she has experienced considerable personal growth.

Moroney launched her recording career with her debut album, Lucky, in 2023. She followed it with Am I Okay? in 2024 before releasing Cloud 9 in February 2026.

Her career has also brought significant recognition. In 2024, she took home New Female Artist of the Year at the ACM Awards and New Artist of the Year at the CMA Awards.

Moroney has also made an impact on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, with five songs appearing on the ranking. Two tracks from Cloud 9, “Beautiful Things” and “6 Months Later,” reached No. 8.
