Maren Morris Shares That Shifting Between Musical Styles Can Be ‘Quite Isolating’

The Grammy-winning artist’s upcoming album, Dreamsicle, is set to drop on May 9.

Maren Morris opened up about exploring different musical genres in a recent TalkShopLive stream with Kathy Buccio. The “Carry Me Through” singer discussed her shift from country to pop while promoting her forthcoming album, Dreamsicle.

When asked about her conversations with Taylor Swift, who is famous for her genre-blending musical journey, Morris shared that they did indeed talk about transitioning between genres. She recalled having the conversation while on tour with The Chicks.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better support system than talking to Martie [Maguire], Emily [Strayer], Natalie [Maines], and people like Taylor, who have navigated these changes in their own ways,” she explained. “It can sometimes feel really isolating.”

Maren Morris reflected on the importance of having people who have experienced similar transitions. “Having those people who have been through some version of it—honestly, I wouldn’t be the same person today if someone who had gone through it hadn’t given me some kind of peace talk,” she shared.

Although these conversations took place about two years ago, Morris found them “incredibly helpful.” She added, “I love girls’ girls.”

She also clarified her approach to switching between genres, emphasizing that she isn’t leaving her country roots behind. “I don’t feel like I have to choose between genres. I just write the music, and wherever it goes, it goes,” Morris explained.

Regarding previous headlines about her genre changes, she said, “Sometimes a story will take on a life of its own and become a version of the truth.”

In a conversation with PEOPLE back in March, Morris talked about creating Dreamsicle, explaining that while the process was “cathartic,” she wasn’t aiming to villainize anyone. “I feel like if it doesn’t feel like a risk, it’s probably not worth doing,” she said at the time. “So I tried to leave enough on the bone to satisfy my healing.”

Morris filed for divorce from her husband, Ryan Hurd, in October 2023. Dreamsicle is her first full-length album since the life change, though she released the Intermission EP in August. Her last full LP, Humble Quest, dropped in March 2022.

She added, “But I’m also not here to make a villain out of anyone or a hero out of myself. We all have both sides inside of us, so I just wanted to tell the story that would heal my heart. That’s my goal here.”
