Luke Bryan Reflects on Missing a Morgan Wallen Hit and Feeling ‘Overlooked’

The country star shares his thoughts in an honest conversation with Bobby Bones.
Luke Bryan has enjoyed a highly successful career, but like many artists, he’s faced moments of uncertainty that led to decisions he now looks back on with regret. In a revealing interview with Bobby Bones, Bryan shared one such experience — turning down a song that later became a massive hit for Morgan Wallen.
As Luke Bryan reflected on his musical journey, Bobby Bones asked, “Are you now sometimes choosing songs that you wouldn’t have recorded five years ago because of what they’re about?” This question immediately brought to Bryan’s mind a particular moment — when he passed on a song written by HARDY, Josh Osborne, and Ashley Gorley titled “Sand In My Boots.”
After Luke Bryan decided to pass on the song, Morgan Wallen went on to record “Sand In My Boots” for his record-breaking 2021 album, Dangerous: The Double Album. The track became Wallen’s fifth No. 1 hit on the Billboard Country Airplay chart and earned a 2X Platinum certification.
Bryan explained that his decision to decline the song wasn’t because he doubted its quality. Instead, he was intentionally steering clear of songs that referenced trucks at the time. Since “Sand In My Boots” features a Chevrolet Silverado in its chorus, Bryan felt it aligned too closely with the type of songs he had already released. He recalled facing online criticism and being labeled a “one-trick pony,” which influenced his choice to diversify his music.
“There was a point in my career where I felt like I had sung about trucks enough,” Bryan admitted. “I mean, I foolishly passed on Morgan’s ‘Sand In My Boots’ just because it mentioned a Chevrolet. I had spent about two years thinking, ‘Man, I sing about trucks a lot. I sing about tailgates,’ and I think I let that get in my head a little too much.”
