Lionel Richie Undergoes Heart Procedure and Cancels Three Upcoming Tour Shows

Lionel Richie is reportedly recovering well after undergoing the heart procedure.
Lionel Richie is taking a brief break from performing after undergoing a minor medical procedure, resulting in the cancellation of three upcoming shows on his Sing a Song All Night Long tour with Earth, Wind & Fire.
The 77-year-old music icon was hospitalized earlier this week after experiencing an irregular heartbeat. According to a statement from Richie’s representatives to PEOPLE, the singer underwent a minor procedure and was told that everything went successfully.
Richie received treatment for atrial fibrillation, commonly known as AFib, through a procedure called atrial fibrillation ablation. The Mayo Clinic describes the treatment as a way to address irregular and frequently rapid heart rhythms by using energy to create small areas of scar tissue in the heart. These scars help prevent abnormal electrical signals from interfering with the heart’s normal rhythm.
Richie is reportedly recovering well following the procedure, but he will need some time to recuperate before resuming his live performances. The hospitalization is reportedly his third in a three-month period.
Earlier in June, TMZ reported that Richie was transported to a hospital by ambulance after he reportedly felt dizzy and unwell during a performance in St. Paul. He subsequently returned to the stage and made light of the situation while addressing the audience.
During that performance, Richie reflected on the previous 24 hours and joked about receiving plenty of advice from friends about what he should do following the health scare.
The latest development means fans will have to wait a little longer to see the singer back onstage as he focuses on his recovery.
