Lainey Wilson Pays Tribute to Small Town Life and Heartache in Her Latest Single, ‘Somewhere Over Laredo’

The fresh single is scheduled to hit country radio on Tuesday, May 27.

Lainey Wilson is making her way to country radio with her emotionally charged new single, “Somewhere Over Laredo,” released through BBR Music Group/BMG Nashville.

Co-written by Wilson, a Grammy-winning artist, along with Trannie Anderson, Dallas Wilson, and Andy Albert, the smooth, mid-tempo song explores a past romance that was intense but short-lived.

Drawing on vivid imagery and paying homage to the iconic “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” Wilson tells a nostalgic story about a love that first sparked along the Rio Grande.

She sings with heartfelt emotion, “I’m flying high on a 737 / Yeah, boy, I’m eye level with these stars / You’d think I’d be closer to heaven / But I reckon heaven’s down there where you are / Do you stop and stare at the Texas sky / Up in the air, and wonder if I’m / Somewhere over Laredo?”

Ultimately, the song reveals that what seemed like a thrilling rodeo romance was always destined to fade. Along the way, Wilson pays tribute not only to Texas but also to small-town America.

With her genuine country voice and distinctive Louisiana accent, she sings in the chorus, “Somewhere over Laredo / Dreaming about those rodeo nights / Laid there on the banks of the Rio / New silver buckle on your jeans next to mine / Couple wrong for each other, lone star-crossed lovers / Born to get gone from the get-go / But you’re on my mind every time I’m chasing this neon rainbow / Somewhere over Laredo.”

“Somewhere Over Laredo” is set to officially hit radio this Tuesday, May 27, through Broken Bow Records, with fans hearing the track debut across major country radio stations nationwide.

In addition, Lainey Wilson will perform the song live for the first time at the 2025 American Music Awards on Monday, May 26. She enters the ceremony as a nominee for Favorite Female Country Artist.

This release comes amid a remarkable year for Wilson, highlighted by her sweeping four awards at the 60th Annual ACM Awards. Her wins included Entertainer of the Year (for the second year running), Female Artist of the Year (third consecutive win), Album of the Year for Whirlwind, and Artist-Songwriter of the Year.

At the same event, she also premiered a new track called “Trailblazer,” performed alongside Reba McEntire and Miranda Lambert. Wilson co-wrote the song with Lambert and Brandy Clark.

Currently, Wilson is touring extensively on her nearly sold-out Whirlwind World Tour, with performances at major venues such as Madison Square Garden in New York, Kia Forum in Los Angeles, Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Moody Center in Austin, Raising Cane’s River Center Arena in Baton Rouge, and Ball Arena in Denver, among others.
