“Ever since I first heard this song, for some reason, I imagined Dolly Parton singing it too,” Clarkson remarked after performing the No. 1 hit.
Please, please, please make this cover available, Kelly Clarkson!
The 42-year-old Grammy winner performed a rendition of Sabrina Carpenter’s “Please Please Please” during the Kellyoke segment of her NBC talk show on Wednesday, Nov. 13. She reimagined the chart-topping hit as a soulful country tune, drawing inspiration from Dolly Parton.
“That was ‘Please Please Please’ by Sabrina Carpenter. It’s her first No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100, which I found surprising,” Clarkson said after performing the song with her band at the start of the episode. “I thought she’d had others, but I was like, ‘Well, that’s amazing!'”
The “Miss Independent” singer then shared her inspiration behind the country twist on the track, which was produced by Jack Antonoff. “Ever since I heard this song, for some reason, I imagined Dolly Parton singing it too,” she explained.
“It just feels like it could work as a country song, so I asked my band if we could make a country version of it, since the original pop version is already fantastic,” Clarkson added.
“But I really love that song, and I love when a song is so good that it can be reinterpreted in different genres,” she continued. “So thank you, Sabrina, for that song, and thank you for letting me sing it.”
Released in June as the second single from Short n’ Sweet, Carpenter’s latest album, “Please Please Please” quickly soared to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The track followed “Espresso,” which reached No. 3 on the chart.
Earlier this month, “Please Please Please” earned a Grammy Award nomination for Song of the Year.
Shortly after its release, Carpenter’s longtime friend, Joey King, spoke to PEOPLE about her admiration for the song. “I’m so happy for her, and I just can’t stop singing ‘Please Please Please’… get out of my head,” said the actress.
