“Keith absolutely didn’t hang up,” a source told PEOPLE. “He’s not the one managing the Zoom interviews anyway.”
Keith Urban Didn’t Abruptly End Interview Over Nicole Kidman Question, Says Insider
Although it appeared that Keith Urban suddenly left a radio interview after being asked about wife Nicole Kidman’s on-screen romantic scenes, a source close to the situation says that’s not what really happened.
Despite a wave of media coverage, the 57-year-old country artist wasn’t the one who cut the interview short during a segment with Hayley & Max in the Morning on Mix 102.3 in Australia on July 1.
“Keith didn’t hang up — not at all,” the insider told PEOPLE. “He doesn’t manage his Zoom calls. The whole thing is being blown out of proportion.”
During the chat, co-hosts Max Burford and Hayley Pearson introduced a segment called the “Wall of Truth,” in which guests are asked a bold and personal question. Pearson explained that the questions are designed to be both tough and intimate.
Burford led with a reference to Kidman’s latest project, A Family Affair, which co-stars Zac Efron. “I was thinking of something to ask you, Keith,” Burford said, “and since your stunning wife Nicole appears in so many iconic shows and movies… I recently saw her with Zac Efron in A Family Affair.”
Urban responded with a casual, “Oh yeah, that’s a good one.”
Burford then followed up: “What goes through your mind when you see your beautiful wife in romantic scenes with younger actors like Zac Efron?”
Immediately after the question was posed, Urban disappeared from the Zoom call. Another voice chimed in to say that he had been “disconnected.”
“I think his team cut the call because they didn’t want that question asked,” one voice remarked.
Pearson agreed, suggesting it was “definitely” a reaction to the personal nature of the question. However, Burford seemed unsure, noting that Urban had been “smiling” moments earlier.
The source emphasized that Urban is known for being easygoing in interviews and wasn’t personally offended by the topic.
Urban’s representatives declined to comment on the situation.
Nicole Kidman, 58, stars opposite Efron, 37, in A Family Affair, which premiered in June 2024. In the film, she plays a widowed novelist who begins a romance with her daughter’s self-centered celebrity boss, played by Efron.
Speaking to PEOPLE last year, Kidman reflected on reuniting with Efron after working with him on 2012’s The Paperboy. “When you’ve got a shared history, it just makes everything easier,” she said. “You’re not trying to build trust from scratch. So there’s no awkwardness about physical scenes — I completely trust Zac.”
Urban and Kidman tied the knot in 2006 and recently celebrated 19 years of marriage. The couple shares two daughters: Sunday Rose, 16, and Faith Margaret, 14.
To mark the occasion, Kidman posted a black-and-white photo of the couple hugging, captioned, “Happy Anniversary Baby ❤️ @KeithUrban.”
Back in December, she told PEOPLE that Urban still surprises her after all these years, saying he keeps their relationship vibrant and full of unexpected moments.
