Jelly Roll Says 300-Pound Weight Loss Helped Him Become a ‘Better Father’
Jelly Roll is opening up about how losing weight has transformed his life in multiple ways.
The 41-year-old country star spoke with Extra following the live premiere of Netflix’s Star Search, revealing that shedding 300 pounds has made him a “better father.” Born Jason DeFord, Jelly Roll said the journey brought him closer to both God and himself.
“I’m more present with my kids. You should see it,” he shared. “I’m even coaching my son’s basketball team this year. It’s not a competitive team, but I feel physically capable now. When you weigh 550 pounds, you’re just worried if there’s a bench that can hold you. Now, I can actually participate. Losing the weight has made me a completely different person.”
Jelly Roll began his fatherhood journey in May 2008 with the birth of his daughter, Bailee Ann. He welcomed his son, Noah Buddy, eight years later in August 2016. He and his wife, Bunnie Xo (real name Alyssa DeFord), are looking forward to expanding their family further.
On May 8, the couple spoke with Access Hollywood during the 2025 Academy of Country Music Awards about their ongoing IVF journey. “We’re right in the middle of it,” he said. “Thanks to everyone supporting and praying for us. The journey is tough, but we’re still trying.”
Jelly Roll has previously shared that his desire to see his children grow inspired him to take control of his health. On the Bussin’ with the Boys podcast in June 2024, he revealed that he initially aimed to lose 60 pounds to ensure he could live long enough to watch his kids grow.
“My wife and I are planning for another baby, and it really hit me that I need to live long enough—at least to 60—to see my kids into college,” he explained.
The devoted father also prioritizes spending quality time with his children. In December, he attended the Tennessee Volunteers vs. Illinois Fighting Illini basketball game in Nashville, sitting courtside with his son, Noah Buddy. The outing was a rare father-son moment, allowing them to enjoy the game together.
That same month, Noah joined Jelly Roll on the red carpet for the Los Angeles premiere of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, sharing his love for both the movie and his dad’s music with Entertainment Tonight.
