“I didn’t intend for it to turn out this way, but it feels like a 10-year update on my life and everything that’s happened since.”
When Cole Swindell released “You Should Be Here” in 2015, he was coping with the sudden death of his father and reflecting on life moments he wished they could have experienced together. Ten years later, his life has changed significantly. Now married and a father, he has begun writing from a new perspective with his latest song, “Girl Dad.”
Swindell and his wife, Courtney, welcomed their daughter, Rainey Gail Swindell, in August 2025, a milestone that deepened the personal meaning behind the new track. Although he now embraces fatherhood, the song carries emotional weight tied to his own experience of loss.
Co-written with Michael Tyler and Ben Stennis, the ballad features a soft piano arrangement and finds Swindell speaking to his late father through lyrics that reflect on major life events he wishes he could share with him. These include getting married and becoming a parent.
The song opens with him visiting his father’s grave, acknowledging that even after years have passed, the grief remains. From there, he reflects on key moments in his life since his father’s passing.
In the lyrics, he describes falling in love, marrying his partner in California, and eventually becoming a father himself, expressing both joy and sadness as he wishes his dad could have witnessed these milestones. The song blends celebration with longing, highlighting the emotional contrast between life’s happiest moments and the absence of a loved one.
Swindell first shared the track privately with a small group of fans before deciding to release it publicly. He explained that the decision brought back memories of releasing “You Should Be Here,” a moment filled with similar vulnerability and uncertainty.
He added that fan support has played a major role in his journey, saying that performing for audiences makes him feel connected and at home, even when far from familiar places.
To further emphasize the connection between past and present, Swindell also revisited visual themes from the “You Should Be Here” music video in “Girl Dad,” showing how his life has evolved while honoring where it all began.
