Blake Shelton Shares How Post Malone Inspired Him to Get Excited About Recording His New Album, Recreational Use Only

Blake Shelton credited Post Malone with inspiring his new album.
On Tuesday, May 13, during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the 48-year-old country singer explained how 29-year-old Malone helped motivate him for his latest project, For Recreational Use Only.
Shelton said, “In some ways, Post Malone really sparked a fire under me.” He also referred to their summer 2024 collaboration on the song “Somebody Pour Me a Drink,” describing the experience as “fun.”
“It’s been four years since I released an album,” Shelton said. “I had this song with him, and his energy is infectious. If you’ve spent any time around Post Malone, you know you can’t help but have a good time—he’s genuinely enthusiastic about everything.”
“I thought to myself, ‘What am I waiting for? I need to make an album,’” Shelton explained. “That song really reignited my passion.” This motivation led to the release of his album, which came out on Friday, May 9.
Fallon, 50, praised Malone’s versatility in crossing different musical genres, while Shelton suggested that Malone should focus on country music.
During the show, Shelton also gave a live performance of his new track, “Texas.”
Earlier this month, the “God’s Country” singer told PEOPLE about teaming up with the “Circles” artist after leaving The Voice in 2023, where he had spent 23 seasons.
“It took me about a year before I was ready to consider, ‘What’s next?’” Shelton explained.
Eventually, Malone reached out to collaborate on “Somebody Pour Me a Drink,” and the song’s success “really motivated me,” Shelton said.
Shelton is set to return for The Voice’s season finale on May 20 and shared that he’s “excited” to reunite with everyone involved in the show. Reflecting on the experience, he said, “The crew and everyone behind the scenes really become like family.”
He also noted that he met his wife, Gwen Stefani, on the show about 10 years ago.
“It’s been a couple of years since I last saw many of those people,” he added.
