“On Our Way Along” Brings the Cyrus Family Together
On Friday, April 3, Billy Ray Cyrus released “On Our Way Along,” the lead single from his upcoming album The Hill. The song is a family collaboration, featuring daughter Noah Cyrus on vocals and son Braison Cyrus as co-writer and co-producer.
The track celebrates the family’s Nashville property, reflecting on their shared experiences there. Billy Ray and Noah sing about “where the sun rises on the hill” and the journey they’ve shared together.
In an interview with American Songwriter published on April 2, the two-time Grammy winner, 64, explained, “It’s all about this hill, and realizing that my whole life unfolded on this hill, and the magic of this place here. It’s all come full circle.”
The pre-chorus sees Billy Ray and Noah singing, “Of all the paths we could have walked, I’m just glad ours crossed / And all the battles we have fought, and all the friends we lost on our way along.”
Describing the song in a press release, Billy Ray called it a “celebration of all things music and family” and said it was “made from the heart for the heart.” Noah, 26, expressed her excitement about collaborating with her father and brother, saying, “Braison has produced a beautiful album, and I’m happy to be a small part of it and our father’s legacy.”
The music video, directed by CMA award winner Dustin Haney and filmed on their Nashville property, opens with Billy Ray emerging from morning fog as the song begins. The video shows him performing in an open field with a guitar before shifting to a scene of a young girl—symbolizing a young Noah—walking toward a piano, which then transitions to the real Noah playing and singing alongside her father.
The video continues with the duo performing the chorus, “Times running out, I’ve had too much to kill / I feel it every time when I look out at the hill,” before fading out with Billy Ray alone in the field.
The Hill, slated for release on June 16, is Billy Ray’s first album since 2019’s The SnakeDoctor Circus and his first entirely new studio project in 14 years. Speaking to American Songwriter, he shared gratitude for this new chapter in his career, admitting he wasn’t sure he’d have the chance to make music again.
“This is all pretty serious to me because I didn’t know if I’d ever get to really play the game again,” he said. “In 2019, I was on top of the world with ‘Old Town Road.’ Then 2020 came, they gave me a couple of Grammys, and the door closed.”
